Ceasefire Urged to Combat Ebola in Conflict-Ridden Eastern Congo

The World Health Organization calls for a ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to tackle an escalating Ebola outbreak. Amid conflict-driven displacement and community distrust, response efforts face severe challenges, with acute shortages of essential medical supplies exacerbating the crisis.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for a ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to manage the surging Ebola outbreak. He emphasized that ongoing conflict is making it difficult to build community trust and effectively isolate affected individuals, further spreading the disease.

The conflict and the outbreak have reported over 900 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths with children making up a quarter of the fatalities. Despite donor pledges of $500 million, resource allocation and community attacks have impeded the healthcare response, placing frontline workers at risk.

Shortages in vital protective equipment severely impact response operations, as reported by health professionals in North Kivu. Foreign aid cuts are blamed for the dire situation, with local and international NGOs struggling to maintain effective infection control measures amid the escalating crisis.
