The Director-General of the World Health Organization welcomes the appointment of Winnie Byanyima as the new Executive Director of UNAIDS
Since its creation in 1996, UNAIDS has coordinated UN efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS, pioneering some innovative approaches and helping the world achieve remarkable progress, particularly in the expansion of access to treatment. However, HIV prevention remains a major challenge among many groups and in many countries.
World leaders agreed in 2015 to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. WHO is a proud co-sponsor of UNAIDS and looks forward to working alongside the Secretariat, and its new Executive Director, to achieve this goal.
"Ms. Byanyima has an impressive professional background and brings deep experience and expertise to this role. She will be a great asset to the Joint Programme.
