Former US President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have expressed private concerns about Joe Biden's 2024 campaign, fearing difficulties he might face against Donald Trump, CNN reported. Despite their worries, both remain unsure about the next steps to take.

Amid rising desperation within the Democratic Party to resolve infighting and refocus on defeating Trump, members are appealing to Obama and Pelosi for guidance. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries lack the strong relationship with Biden needed to deliver critical messages effectively.

CNN's discussions with over a dozen Congress members and operatives reveal a consensus that Biden's candidacy is increasingly seen as untenable. If Obama and Pelosi believe otherwise, leading Democrats argue they must state it soon to avoid further damage before the election. Pelosi has spoken with Biden but has not ruled out his remaining in the race, whereas Obama’s public silence over the past two weeks has left many feeling abandoned.

Obama’s skepticism about Biden's ability to win reelection is reportedly well-known in Washington. As Democrats wait for Biden to decide, the role of Obama and Pelosi as guiding figures will be scrutinized. The Biden campaign has declined to comment.

While Pelosi’s spokesperson acknowledges discussions about Biden have taken place, they dispute any claims of detailed inside knowledge. Obama has been largely a listener, avoiding firm stances that might leak, even in private conversations with Biden, where he played a neutral counselor role.

Obama has reportedly dismissed the idea that he can influence Biden’s decision to run. Their complex relationship and infrequent conversations since Obama left office suggest Biden’s decision might be hardened by further discussion.

Obama’s potential involvement in encouraging Biden to step down is viewed cautiously because of past interactions. Biden may perceive any advice from Obama as another intervention like in 2015, leading to Trump's election, CNN reported.

Obama remains cautious of providing Trump with new material. He has supported Biden at fundraising events, at one of which, actor George Clooney voiced concerns about Biden’s condition after observing him, a move some interpreted as influenced by Obama.

Pelosi's recent public comments cast doubt on Biden’s candidacy. Privately, she advises colleagues to avoid embarrassing Biden, yet her stance prompted more calls for Biden to step down. As Biden’s long-time defender, Pelosi’s unique position might prove pivotal if Biden decides not to run.

Pelosi plans to return to San Francisco, leaving the Democratic Party in a state of uncertainty and search for leadership, CNN reported.
