Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon on Monday expressed optimism about the improvement of ties between New Delhi and Male, following diplomatic tensions earlier this year.
Maumoon’s comments come in the wake of President Mohamed Muizzu’s appreciation of India’s support in easing the island nation’s debt repayment. The President also expressed hope for stronger bilateral ties and a potential free trade agreement (FTA) with India. Speaking with ANI, Maumoon reflected on the country’s Independence Day and emphasized the need for economic independence and responsible governance.
Addressing the current administration's foreign policy, Muizzu expressed gratitude towards India and China for their support in easing debt burdens. He also highlighted ongoing negotiations for currency swap agreements with both nations and expressed aspirations for an FTA with the United Kingdom and India. Maumoon echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of consistency in international relations and warning against diplomatic ties becoming tools for political maneuvering.
Maumoon further commented on the economic situation in the Maldives, noting the concentration of wealth in a few hands, especially within the tourism sector. She raised concerns about the high unemployment rate among young people and the lack of avenues for entrepreneurship, calling for significant changes during President Muizzu’s term.
The relationship between India and the Maldives faced strains since Muizzu took office, particularly after controversial remarks by Maldivian deputies about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This led to escalated tensions and diplomatic efforts from both sides to restore relationships. Despite challenges, Muizzu has sought measures like debt relief and has reassured that India remains the Maldives’ closest ally.
