Iran has responded with fury to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political bureau chief of Hamas, in Tehran. Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that Tehran would defend its territorial integrity and dignity, Al Jazeera reported. He emphasized that the bond between Iran and Palestine would grow stronger, following Haniyeh's assassination during his visit to Tehran for a presidential ceremony.
President Pezeshkian, in a heartfelt statement, mourned Haniyeh as a 'martyr of al-Quds' and vowed that Iran would make the perpetrators regret their 'cowardly action.' Iran's Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei offered condolences, labeling Haniyeh a 'courageous leader.' The Iranian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Haniyeh's sacrifices would not be in vain while continuing investigations into his targeted killing.
Global responses have been swift and stern. Qatar, Turkey, and Russia condemned the assassination, stressing its potential to escalate regional tensions. Qatar's foreign ministry called the killing a 'heinous crime' and 'flagrant violation of international law,' whereas Turkey blamed the Israeli government for spreading the Gaza conflict regionally. Hamas has vowed revenge, accusing Israel of the assassination and calling for a continued resistance against Zionist occupiers.
