External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday voiced India's significant concerns over the potential expansion of the Middle East conflict. Speaking at a Carnegie Endowment event in the US, Jaishankar labeled Hamas' attack on Israel as a 'terrorist attack,' affirming Israel's need to retaliate.

However, Jaishankar stressed that any country's response should comply with international humanitarian law, emphasizing the necessity to minimize civilian casualties. He highlighted the urgency of international humanitarian efforts, particularly in Gaza, amid escalating violence involving various regions and entities, including Lebanon, the Houthis in the Red Sea, and Iran.

India has consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first global leaders to condemn Hamas' attack on October 7. Despite supporting Israel's right to defend itself, India has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The conflict has intensified with Houthi rebels targeting Israel and other Red Sea nations, while Israel has been striking Hezbollah in Lebanon. Amid calls for a ceasefire and a sustainable two-state solution, Iran launched a missile attack on Israel, triggering widespread alarms and plunging Israeli civilians into bomb shelters.

The situation remains critical, with 102 missiles reportedly launched towards Israel and around 10 million civilians under threat. The conflict's escalation underscores the pressing need for international diplomatic interventions and adherence to humanitarian principles.
