Taiwan Experiences Population Dip as Birth Rates Lag Behind

Taiwan's population fell by 2,470 in September, as reported by the MOI. This decline is due to a lower birth rate compared to the death rate, despite a net migration gain. Birth numbers decreased slightly from last year, according to household registration data.

In a recent demographic update from the Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan has reported a slight decrease in its population for September. The island's population numbers now stand at 23,404,138 residents, a reduction of 2,470 compared to the end of August, according to Focus Taiwan.

The decline is attributed largely to a lower birth rate of 6.15 per 1,000 people. This figure falls short compared to a higher death rate of 8.11 per 1,000, leading to an overall decrease in the population. Although Taiwan experienced a net migration increase, with 1,301 more people entering than leaving, it couldn't counterbalance the disparity between births and deaths.

This year, Taiwan registered 97,733 births, slightly less than the 99,652 recorded in the same timeframe last year. The data, derived from the nation’s household registration records, highlights ongoing demographic challenges amid fluctuating birth and death rates.
