A recent report indicates that political protests organized by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, have inflicted damages of PKR 240 million on private and public property across Islamabad, according to Geo Tv. The report was delivered by the Islamabad Inspector General's office to the chief commissioner following a weekend of violence in Pakistan's capital. PTI supporters, campaigning for the independence of the judiciary and the release of their imprisoned leader, swept through Islamabad's streets causing widespread disruption.
Geo Tv reports that these protests are partly in response to proposed constitutional amendments by the Shehbaz Sharif government. The PTI, known for its extended protests, is echoing its 2014 protest tactics in Lahore. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged to prevent a recurrence of past disruptions caused by prolonged PTI sit-ins.
The report observed significant damages, including 441 city surveillance cameras worth PKR 140 million, and noted one officer dead and several injured. Economic output has suffered significantly, with Pakistan's Finance Ministry estimating a loss of PKR 190 billion due to the interruption of economic activities in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad amidst the unrest.
