In a diplomatic engagement set to take place against a backdrop of regional tensions, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain is poised to meet with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Muscat. This significant meeting will unfold during the 8th Indian Ocean Conference, as confirmed by officials from Bangladesh's foreign ministry.
According to a statement from a Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official, the bilateral meeting is slated for February 16. This comes after the two leaders previously conferred in New York during the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last September. Key topics on the agenda may include Bangladesh's political landscape, especially concerns over unsanctioned social media commentary by interim Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now staying in India.
Amidst talks of the potential April meeting between Bangladesh's interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangkok, regional discussions remain pertinent given current events. Recently, the vandalism of Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence by protestors demanding a ban on the Awami League has amplified tensions, drawing condemnation from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has made clear the responsibility of host nations to safeguard diplomatic premises.
