In a significant milestone for India-Japan defense relations, the 6th edition of the joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian, commenced on February 24, 2025, at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan. Highlighting the deepening defense cooperation, the exercise has expanded to a company-strength troop level for the first time since its inception, continuing through March 9, 2025.

This year's edition features a broader range of activities than previous sessions, underscoring the evolving strategic partnership between the two nations. The Ministry of Defence noted in a recent press release that the annual event, which alternates between India and Japan, aims to enhance interoperability between the forces. The focus remains on joint urban warfare, counter-terrorism operations under a UN mandate, and the emphasis on physical fitness, joint planning, and tactical drills.

Building on the success of the Chief of the Army Staff's visit to Japan in October 2024, the exercise demonstrates a shared commitment to regional security. Both countries are driving towards a free and open Indo-Pacific, reinforcing their military ties and cultural understanding. Dharma Guardian represents the enduring bonds of friendship and trust between India and Japan, fortifying defense cooperation and professional engagement.
