On Tuesday, Nahid Islam, the information adviser to Bangladesh's interim government under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, stepped down to enter the political arena. A prominent student leader, Islam played a significant role in the campaign that led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's removal in August last year.
Speaking to reporters following his resignation submission to the Chief Adviser, Islam announced his decision to join a new political party scheduled to launch on February 28. The event will coincide with a grand rally at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka, organized by students and other activists involved in the movement against Hasina.
Nahid Islam is anticipated to lead the new party, whose name has not yet been revealed. Last year's student-led protests led to Hasina fleeing to India after weeks of unrest, which saw over 600 fatalities, and paved the way for the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to take over.
The post-Hasina era has seen increased discussions between India and Bangladesh regarding border security, given multiple cross-border attempts, while high-level bilateral issues remain a focus. Islam was among the leaders protesting against Hasina's regime.
Since Yunus's appointment, his administration has faced ongoing opposition protests over minority-related violence, demanding Yunus's resignation and accusing him of biased governance. Earlier in February, Awami League supporters called for Yunus to step down, arguing that Hasina remains the legitimate Prime Minister as per the Constitution, and calling for her re-election.
