Former Canadiens player saves two women from fire

Former Montreal Canadiens left wing Mario Roberge is being hailed as a hero in Canada for saving two women from a burning building. The 55-year-old Roberge, who played 112 games for the Canadiens over five seasons from 1990-95, was leaving his Quebec City home early on Jan. 22, according to the Montreal Gazette, when he smelled smoke and saw that it was coming from an apartment building across the street.

Before emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Roberge climbed the stairs of the building and found two women, age 80 and 60, in an apartment full of thick smoke. He took them to his home until help arrived. The owner of the apartment building said he believes that without Roberge's intervention, the two women would have been overcome by smoke and died.

The building was destroyed. Roberge scored seven goals and had seven assists in his career, racking up 314 penalty minutes. His most productive season came when he saw 50 games of action for the 1992-93 Canadiens team that won the Stanley Cup. He played in three playoff games that season.
