Reports: G Ellington close to deal with Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are close to signing free agent guard Wayne Ellington, multiple outlets reported Friday. According to Yahoo Sports, Detroit will waive forward Henry Ellenson to make room on the roster.

Ellington was bought out by the Phoenix Suns on Thursday after being traded to Phoenix by the Miami Heat in a deal that also sent Tyler Johnson to the Suns for Ryan Anderson. Ellington, 31, is one of the top players available on the buyout market, despite having a down season. Primarily known as a 3-point shooter, his accuracy has dipped to 36.8 percent from deep this season, down from 39.2 percent last year, when he averaged a career-best 2.9 made 3-point field goals per game. Likewise, Ellington's scoring average has slipped from 11.2 to 8.4 per game.

The 10th-year veteran has a career average of 8 points per game on 38 percent shooting from deep. Ellington was expected to have interest in joining a playoff contender. The Pistons (24-29) entered Friday 1 1/2 games back of Miami for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ellenson, 22, was drafted 18th overall by the Pistons in 2016 but has played in just 59 career games, averaging 3.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per contest. --Field Level Media
