In a significant move to bolster defense ties, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia are deliberating on the supply of fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighters to India. A Russian committee has evaluated the infrastructure at HAL, indicating that 50% of current facilities can accommodate the aircraft production, although new investments will be necessary, HAL Chairman & Managing Director D.K. Sunil stated.
Sunil revealed that a Russian estimate for the required investment is pending, following which the Indian Air Force will be consulted on production numbers and timelines. The partnership represents a major evolution from a buyer-seller relationship to a joint development framework, according to a Ministry of External Affairs brief.
The strategic alliance seeks to enhance joint manufacturing initiatives, including technology transfer under the Make-in-India program, with potential exports to aligned nations. Russia has reiterated its commitment to supporting India's defense needs, emphasizing no restrictions on technology transfer for the Su-57, while engaging positively with Indian concerns and technical requirements.
