A Chinese-flagged barge, Hai Hong Gong 66, is believed to have caused damage to an undersea telecommunications cable near the Matsu Islands during a salvage mission, raising tensions in the region. The incident was disclosed on Wednesday, following a report by the Central News Agency.
The barge was reportedly involved in removing a Chinese fishing boat, Min Lian Yu 63896, late on March 30 when it allegedly damaged the Taiwan-Matsu Subsea Cable No. 3. The damage was reported by Chunghwa Telecom on March 31, leading to immediate action by the Coast Guard Administration (CGA).
Authorities promptly dispatched a patrol vessel to the scene, which conducted an inspection and detained 11 crew members, including the captain, who was brought ashore for questioning. The Lienchiang District Prosecutors' Office is now handling the investigation.
The fishing vessel had taken on water and was abandoned by its crew on March 21, who were subsequently rescued. The owner engaged Hai Hong Gong 66 for removal operations starting March 30. Authorities will continue to track the barge's movements as Chunghwa Telecom evaluates the extent of the damage.
Despite the incident, Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs confirmed that communication services remain stable, as the affected cable section's traffic was rerouted. Upcoming restoration work is planned, with completion expected by July 2026.
