In a recent announcement, the Acting Director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons, is set to step down from his role at the end of May 2026. This news was confirmed by US officials, with Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, lauding Lyons for his leadership in a post on X, while noting his last official day will be May 31.
During his tenure, Lyons played a crucial role in aiding the Trump administration's efforts to remove individuals posing threats to communities, such as murderers and gang members. His leadership saw the agency reinvigorated after a period of inactivity, resulting in increased safety for American communities, Mullin said, while wishing him success in his future endeavors in the private sector.
Appointed in March 2025, Lyons' time as acting director was not without controversy, particularly amidst an intensified deportation effort and incidents involving ICE agents that garnered nationwide criticism. His forthcoming departure leaves ICE without a Senate-confirmed leader, a situation persisting since the Obama era, and introduces uncertainty about the agency's leadership moving forward.
