European nations such as Belgium, the Netherlands, and France are gearing up to carry out mine-clearing operations in the crucial Strait of Hormuz, according to France's Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin. Their involvement aims to ensure secure shipping lanes, TF1 reports.
Talks on reopening the strategic strait are slated for Friday in Paris, featuring British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. The virtual summit, as CNN reports, will gather leaders from nearly 40 countries to bolster a ceasefire involving Iran and secure the maritime channel.
The top agenda includes plans for an international mission to reopen the strait, focusing entirely on defensive measures, CNN confirms. Germany, a key participant, promises support pending legal agreements, emphasizing its expertise in mine-clearance and maritime surveillance.
Reiterating Germany's readiness to ensure safe navigation, a German official noted their particular capability in mine-clearance and surveillance, as highlighted by CNN. Earlier assertions by the US Central Command regarding their mine-clearance initiatives in the strait, denied by Iran, underscore the strategic complexity of the region.
US Admiral Brad Cooper stated the establishment of a 'new passage' to secure the region's shipping lanes, signaling robust preventive measures. The reassurance of safe passage aims at restoring the strait as a vital artery for oil and trade, ANI reports.
