In a bold move indicative of his expansionist ambitions, U.S. President Donald Trump has redirected attention towards Latin America with Venezuela becoming the current focal point of his controversial pursuit of a '51st state'. Following the dramatic capture of former leader Nicolas Maduro, Trump is now applying intensified pressure on Caracas.

While en route to a pivotal summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump provoked international response by sharing a map of Venezuela on Truth Social, draped with an American flag. This act accompanies his recent statements to Fox News where he mentioned seriously contemplating making Venezuela a new state of the U.S.

The geopolitical dynamics in Venezuela have been significantly altered since a U.S. military intervention led to Maduro's capture. Despite Trump’s declaration of being 'in control', interim leader Delcy Rodriguez remains steadfast, warning against any undermining of Venezuela's sovereignty. She delineated that Caracas never considered union with the U.S., notwithstanding Trump's fixation, which previously included proposals for a U.S.-Canada merger.
