Dutch prime minister expecting first child via surrogate mother

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said on Monday that he and his partner were expecting their ‌first child, with the assistance of a surrogate mother and an egg donor. "Someone very special is on the ‌way. See you in 2027, little one," Jetten posted on his personal Instagram account, adding emoticons of a baby's head and a bottle.

"There are no words big ‌enough to thank our egg donor, our surrogate mum and both their families. ‌None of this would be possible without you," he said. Jetten is engaged to Argentine field hockey international Nicolas Keenan. The couple had been planning to get married this summer, but postponed their wedding shortly after Jetten became prime minister this year.

Jetten, 39, became the youngest prime minister in Dutch history after his D66 party's unexpected election victory a year ago. The surrogate mother and egg donor are Dutch friends of the couple who already have children of their own, and who had no commercial motives for helping them, D66 said in a statement on its website.

It is illegal in the Netherlands to pay for a surrogate mother. Jetten's party said the "high tech" pregnancy was completely in line with Dutch rules and regulations and had been made possible through IVF care offered in the Netherlands.

D66 said Jetten will take a few days off when the baby is born to be with his family, but is not planning a ‌longer period of ‌parental leave.
