Thousands of Algerian gather to protest against appointment of interim president

Thousands of students protested in downtown Algiers after parliament appointed upper house chairman Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president on Tuesday, a Reuters witness said. Police forces intervened to prevent protesters from marching in the streets but the rally was largely peaceful, the witness said.
