Massive earthquake hits central Philippines - USGS

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitudes struck the central Philippines on Monday, the U.S Geological Survey said. The quake struck 60 km (37 miles) northwest of Manila at a depth of 40 km (25 miles).

A Reuters witness in the capital, Manila, said offices were swaying in the business district of Makati City. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Some people evacuated their offices in Manila.

Philippines Red Cross has also confirmed the massive earthquake.

The Philippines sits on the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire", a horse-shoe shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines circling the edges of the Pacific Ocean.

East Asia has been quite unfortunate with earthquakes in recent times, last year on December 29, Philippines was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale triggering a brief tsunami warning. "Minor sea level disturbances" were witnessed after the earthquake.

Indonesia was also hit with a massive earthquake in September 2018, which left thousands displaced.
