Spain's Sanchez backs fellow socialist Timmermans to head EU's exec Commission

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday backed a fellow socialist, Dutchman Frans Timmermans, to head the European Union's executive Commission. "The Social Democratic family is the second biggest force with the best candidate, (Frans) Timmermans. I hope that opens the way. He has the qualities and the experience," Sanchez told reporters on arriving at talks among national EU leaders to pick five people for the bloc's top jobs.
