Ghana has received Africa’s highest score in Aviation Safety Oversight with an effective implementation rate of 89.89 percent. The International Civil Aviation Organization, a specialized agency in the United Nations, has recently rated Ghana’s aviation safety as the best in the African continent.

Headquartered in Quartier International of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) completed an audit of Ghana’s aviation section in 2019. The audit revealed the West African country’s safety overnight system in eight critical elements by focussing on primary aviation legislation, state operating regulations and state civil aviation system, safety functions and technical personnel qualification and training, as reported by Journal du Cameroun.

The announcement of Ghana’s performance in the aviation safety wing was done at the opening of the 22nd meeting of Africa and Indian Ocean (AFI) Planning and Implementation Regional Group and the fifth meeting of the AFI Regional Aviation Safety Group (RASG) in the capital city, Accra.

Ghana’s feat demonstrated a good example of how fruitful implementing decisions and conclusions reached at the group’s meeting could be, Levers Mabaso, the Chairman of Regional Aviation Safety Group (RASG)- Africa and Indian Ocean (AFI) said at the five-day meeting that attracted over 200 participants from across the region, as well as aircraft manufacturers from the United States and Europe, Graphic Online reported.

“If Ghana can move from position 15 in Africa to position one in the status of implementation in the whole of Africa, it is through such initiatives that we are able to achieve that,” Levers Mabaso said.

According to Joseph Kofi Ada, Ghana’s aviation minister, the government’s commitment to developing the nation’s aviation record drove it to its current status. “As part of measures to continuously improve safety and security in Ghana, the government is committed to collaborating with stakeholders in the aviation industry and also providing resources and policy direction to achieve Ghana’s vision of becoming the aviation hub in the sub-region,” the minister added.

The airport infrastructures in the majority of the African countries were outdated and not improved to address the challenge of growing volume of passengers or cargo. In this competition, Ghana is ahead of all the African countries and highly conscious of aviation safety.

ICAO defines the protocols for air accident investigation that are followed by transport safety authorities in countries signatory to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.
