- India
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday said that media should play a crucial role in spreading awareness of obesity. On the occasion of World Obesity Day, she also urged others to help in raising the awareness level of the people about the "prevalence, severity and diversity of the stigma about weight." On #WorldObesityDay2018 let us raise awareness about the prevalence, severity and diversity of the stigma about weight.
The media must play a crucial role in this regard, Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle today. The World Obesity Federation, this year, has called upon the people to end the stigma associated with obesity besides urging the media to stop using stigmatising language and imagery against obese people.
Instead, it should portray obesity in a fair, accurate and informative manner.
