Four suspected cattle traffickers who were taking four cows for slaughtering have been arrested, police said.

According to the police, the four accused had purchased cows from a woman at Amblamogaru village in Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday and were taking them in a mini goods vehicle to Alekala in Ullal Taluk of the district allegedly for slaughtering.

At one place, the vehicle developed a snag and was unable to climb up, and three of them started pushing it.

To help them, villagers too came there and started pushing the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the villagers noticed the cows covered with a tarpaulin inside the vehicle.

Growing suspicious, when they questioned the four, they fled the scene.

On a complaint by a local resident, the Ullal police registered a case under the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act-2020.

Later, all four accused were arrested. Police gave their names as Ahammad Irsad, Khalid B M, Jafar Sadik and Fayaz. Khalid is from Bangra Manjeshwar in neighbouring Kerala's Kasargod district while the others are from Ullal.
