Uttarakhand police chief Ashok Kumar on Wednesday reviewed the security situation in the state on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha and asked senior police officials to beef up security in their areas by making adequate deployments and stepping up patrolling and vigilance.

The director general of police (DGP), who spoke to the officials via video conference, also directed them to ensure that collective ''qurbanis'' (sacrifices) are made on the occasion only in slaughterhouses and places designated for the purpose. Kumar asked the police chiefs of all districts to be in ''super alert'' mode and to keep an eye on anti-social elements and tour communally sensitive areas. Namaz should be offered only in eidgahs and other places identified for the same, he said in a statement. Meetings of peace committees should be held by the station house officers, circle officers, sub-divisional magistrates, senior superintendents of police and district magistrates in all districts, the DGP said. He also asked the officials to keep a tab on social media and take stern action immediately against anyone who uploads misleading or objectionable posts or tries to spread any rumour.
