EU commissioner Reynders nominated for top job at Council of Europe

EU Commissioner Didier Reynders will be put forward as a candidate to become the Council of Europe's new secretary-general, a spokesperson for the Belgian government said on Wednesday. The Council of Europe is a pan-European group tasked with upholding human rights and the rule of law since its formation after World War Two.
Based in Strasbourg, France, it is not part of the institutions of the European Union. The 5-year term of its current chief, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, ends later this year. Reynders has been Belgium's EU commissioner since 2019, in charge of justice and the rule of law.
