Papua New Guinea declares state of emergency after deadly riots

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape told a news conference on Thursday that he had declared a state of emergency, suspending government and police officials after rioting left 16 people dead.

Marape said he had suspended the country's chief of police as well as top bureaucrats in the finance and treasury departments while the government conducts a review into the cause of the riots. (Editing by Jason Neely; Editing by Toby Chopra)
