Angolan National Assembly's Speaker Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was replaced on December 7 at the helm of Southern African Development Community SADC Parliamentary Forum by his Mozambican counterpart Veronica Nataniel Macamo Dlhovo. This was at end of the 44th Plenary Assembly of the Institution held at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Center in Maputo, Mozambique.
The MPs also elected Isaac Magagula of the Kingdom of Eswatini as deputy speaker of this Organisation. The outgoing leader, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who was taking stock of his leadership, said in terse words that his two-year term knew remarkable progress in several areas.
Under the strengthening institutional capacity, he pointed to the creation of Regional Parliamentary Committee for the Supervision of Model Laws.
The Speaker also mentioned the creation of Committee of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments, a structure tasked with monitoring and implementation the decisions of the Plenary Assembly at the local level.
He recalled the decision of Plenary Assembly to approve a Strategic Plan for the period 2019 to 2023. This enabled the organisation to get endowed with strategic guidelines to progress over the next five years.
The outgoing chairman of the SADC PF also mentioned progress made under the leadership of the Executive Committee in the implementation of several of the body's projects. He recalled that under the SADC HIV/AIDS Fund, the SADC Secretariat and the Parliamentary Forum had joined efforts to launch a Parliamentary Project on Innovation and Sustainable Financing of programmes linked to the pandemic in the region.
The 44th Plenary Assembly ran under the motto Transformation of Parliamentary Forum into Regional Parliament of SADC.
