In a significant crackdown, Mumbai police have apprehended a notorious history-sheeter, Imran Mohammed Hanif Khan alias Imran Kalia, who allegedly extorted Rs 48 lakh from a woman. The accused posed as a relative of the infamous underworld don Dawood Ibrahim to execute the heist, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to police reports, Khan has a notorious criminal record, with six serious cases to his name. The anti-extortion cell of the crime branch arrested him from his residence on Monday evening. The woman victim from South Mumbai sold her flat to invest in what she believed was a legitimate gold deal but was instead coerced into paying Khan Rs 32 lakh initially, followed by an additional Rs 16 lakh under threats.

Khan is currently in police custody, and investigations are underway to unearth more details about the extortion racket. Further legal action will be determined as the probe progresses, officials stated.
