On Monday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh sharply condemned the ambush on his advance security convoy near Kotlen in Kangpokpi district, which left a driver injured. Singh declared it a direct attack on himself and the people of Manipur, emphasizing that the 'rule of law' will be upheld.
Speaking to reporters at Shija hospital, where the injured driver is undergoing treatment, Singh described the attack as unfortunate and highly condemnable. He stressed that this assault on the Chief Minister symbolizes a direct attack on the state's populace. 'The state government must act decisively,' he asserted. Singh added that previous government efforts to seek understanding through dialogue were now overshadowed by consistent violent acts.
Earlier in the day, suspected militants ambushed the Chief Minister's advance security convoy in Kangpokpi district, injuring one person, police reported. The convoy, en route to the violence-affected Jiribam district, was attacked around 10:30 am near Kotlen village along National Highway-53. Gunfire was exchanged, and additional forces, including Assam Rifles and CRPF, were dispatched to the site. Search operations are ongoing, although no arrests have been made thus far.
Jiribam has been engulfed in violence since June 6, resulting in the torching of over 70 houses, two police outposts, and one forest beat office, displacing approximately 600 individuals.
