Mansukh Mandaviya, who diligently served as the union health minister during the critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, has now been appointed as the labour minister. Upon assuming his new role, Mandaviya held meetings with senior officials of the ministry, although he remained tight-lipped about his upcoming strategies and the challenges he anticipates.

This marks Mandaviya's second induction into the Union Cabinet under the NDA government. He succeeds Bhupender Yadav, who has recently been reelected to the Lok Sabha from Alwar, Rajasthan, and sworn in as a cabinet minister. Mandaviya's major task, however, is to steer through significant labour reforms aiming to consolidate 44 existing labour laws into four comprehensive codes focusing on wages, social security, industrial relations, and occupational safety and health. This endeavor comes at a time when the BJP faces a fractured mandate in parliament.

Both the Centre and many states have prepared draft rules for these new codes, though they were not implemented in the previous Modi 2.0 government term due to logistical alignment with state regulations. Labour governance is a concurrent subject in India, allowing both central and state governments the authority to legislate.

A political figure on the rise, Mandaviya won the Lok Sabha seat from Porbandar, Gujarat, overtaking Congress' Lalit Vasoya with a convincing margin of over 3.8 lakh votes. Recognized as the 'Green MP' for his environmentally friendly practices like cycling to Parliament, Mandaviya has been a prominent member of the BJP since his youth. He previously led the health and chemicals and fertilizers ministries during the critical period of the COVID-19 outbreak.
