The eldest of three brothers, Stephin Abraham Sabu, 29, from Pampady, was eagerly anticipating the completion of their new home in August after living in rented accommodation for over 13 years.

But on Thursday, an air of despair enveloped their rented home as unconfirmed news reports about Sabu's presence in the Kuwaiti building fire that killed 49 people and injured many more came through.

Having worked in Kuwait for six years, Sabu was back home six months ago to procure materials for the new house. He had called his mother just days ago, checking on the construction's progress. A marriage proposal was also in the works for Sabu.
