Tamil Nadu's Prohibition and Excise Minister S Muthusamy addressed the legislative assembly, revealing a new rehabilitation initiative for contrite bootleggers. Those showing genuine remorse after their prison term will be set up with a Rs 50,000 subsidy to start their own trade. A substantial fund of Rs 5 crore has been designated for this purpose.
Muthusamy emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, noting that individuals punished for distilling and selling illicit arrack need support to avoid reoffending. The government will also create an integrated scheme to provide the necessary skills through various departments.
A statewide campaign will focus on educating the youth about the dangers of consuming illicit arrack and substance abuse. Additionally, vigilance will be enhanced across prohibition check posts with the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras to curb smuggling activities, Muthusamy concluded.
