In a shocking incident, a village panchayat secretary was shot dead in Assam's Bongaigaon district on Wednesday afternoon, police have confirmed.

According to a police officer, two assailants on motorcycles targeted the victim in front of a tea stall at Kashidoba market, firing from point-blank range.

'The victim, identified as 55-year-old Chandrakanta Das, had just had tea and was about to leave the shop when the attackers struck,' an officer told PTI. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

High-ranking officials, including Bongaigaon's District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, visited the scene to assess the situation. 'Investigation is underway to arrest the killers,' the officer added.
