The Supreme Court will hear a petition on Friday requesting an investigation into the recent Hathras stampede that resulted in 121 deaths.
The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, seeks the formation of a five-member expert committee supervised by a retired apex court judge to probe the July 2 incident.
According to the Supreme Court's schedule for July 12, the case will be heard by a bench including Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
The petition also calls for the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report and initiate legal action against negligent authorities and officials.
Additionally, it seeks guidelines from the apex court to prevent future stampedes at large gatherings. The tragic event occurred during a religious congregation in Hathras, attended by over 2.5 lakh devotees, whereas only 80,000 were permitted to gather.
