The Kerala High Court on Monday appointed an Amicus Curiae to investigate the condition of the Amayizhanchan canal in Thiruvananthapuram, following the unfortunate death of a sanitary worker named Joy. The worker had gone missing two days earlier while clearing waste from the canal.

A bench consisting of Justices Bechu Kurian Thomas and P Gopinath delivered the directive, asking the state government to devise a cleanup plan. The court emphasized the need for cooperation between the city corporation and the railways, insisting that both clear waste within their jurisdictions.

The deceased worker's body was discovered in a decomposed state in the canal by other sanitation workers. The court, which was also examining the Brahmapuram waste plant issue, took up Joy's case after it was mentioned by a lawyer. The court has scheduled a further hearing for July 26 and mandated joint payment of Rs 1.5 lakh to the appointed Amicus Curiae for their investigation.
