In a decisive move, Mumbai's civic body lodged a police complaint on Monday against an unknown individual accused of taking money from citizens applying for the Maharashtra government's 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin' scheme.

According to a statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the complaint was registered at Deonar police station following reports that an individual in M East ward demanded Rs 100 from women applying for the scheme, despite its free application process.

The BMC has strongly urged citizens not to pay any fee for online applications, emphasizing the scheme's purpose of providing financial aid of Rs 1,500 per month to eligible women aged 21-65. Applications can be submitted until August 31.
