The Russian court handling the trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has rescheduled his next hearing to July 18, moving it up from the original date of August 13, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

As per RIA news agency, a court spokesperson revealed that the decision was made at the request of Gershkovich's defense team. The trial, which began behind closed doors last month in Yekaterinburg, involves espionage charges that could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Both Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal, and the United States government have denounced the charges as false and politically motivated.
