Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar made a fervent appeal to the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday, requesting cooperation for the Mekedatu project across the river Cauvery, emphasizing that it would benefit both states.
He expressed hope that water release issues to Tamil Nadu would be resolved if rains continue in Karnataka's Cauvery catchment areas. 'It is for Bengaluru's drinking water, and it benefits you [Tamil Nadu]. Please permit us for Mekedatu,' he implored.
Mekedatu is a proposed multi-purpose project involving a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in Ramanagara. Tamil Nadu has opposed it, fearing adverse effects. If completed, it will ensure drinking water for Bengaluru and generate 400 MW of power. A Project Division and two Sub-Divisions have been set up for its implementation.
