Guo Wengui, a self-exiled Chinese business tycoon, was convicted by a U.S. jury Tuesday of orchestrating a massive multiyear fraud that deceived some of his most devoted fans. Known for his criticism of the Communist Party, Guo gained significant online followers and powerful friends in American conservative circles.

Guo, once among the richest people in China, was arrested in New York in March 2023. He was accused of operating a racketeering enterprise from 2018 to 2023, misleading thousands into investing in fake ventures to sustain a luxurious lifestyle. He was convicted of nine out of 12 criminal counts, including racketeering conspiracy.

Prosecutors claimed Guo tricked followers into investing more than $1 billion in his entities, including GTV Media Group Inc and the Himalaya Exchange. Despite the defense arguing the lack of concrete evidence, the jury found Guo guilty, highlighting a lavish spending spree funded by defrauded investments.
