Wayanad's hill district in Kerala witnessed an intense protest on Wednesday as locals decried the government's inaction over recurring human-animal conflicts after a fatal elephant attack.

The protest, spurred by the death of Raju, 52, who succumbed to injuries from a wild elephant attack on July 14, concluded after government assurances of relief were provided.

Carrying the victim's body on a highway, the community demanded a permanent solution to the escalating human-wildlife conflicts, including significant compensation and job security for the victim's family.

Minister O R Kelu announced relief measures, including Rs 11 lakh financial aid, educational support for Raju's children, and a government job for one child, further pledging to remedy the situation through infrastructural improvements.

Sunday's attack is part of a series of lethal encounters in Kerala this year, highlighting the urgency for resolving the conflicts.
