Intensified Airstrikes in Gaza: Death Toll Rises Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Israeli forces have intensified airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, killing at least 13 people, targeting refugee camps and Gaza City. The ongoing conflict has overwhelmed healthcare facilities and stalled ceasefire negotiations. Hamas and its allies continue to attack Israeli forces, as diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire face obstacles.
Israeli forces bombarded the Gaza Strip's historic refugee camps and struck Gaza City on Thursday, resulting in at least 13 deaths. Tanks pushed deeper into Rafah as health officials and residents reported escalating violence.
An Israeli airstrike in Zawayda killed six, while another strike in Bureij camp claimed two lives. In Deir Al-Balah, three people died in a car hit by an airstrike. Medics confirmed two more Palestinian deaths in Gaza City.
The Israeli military announced the killing of two senior Islamic Jihad commanders in Gaza City, one involved in the Oct. 7 attack that initiated the Gaza war. Meanwhile, Israeli tanks advanced in Rafah, destroying tunnels and eliminating gunmen.
Hamas and allies fired mortar bombs at Israeli forces in Rafah, where a million people had sought shelter, dispersing again post-offensive. The Red Cross field hospital in Rafah neared full capacity, struggling under the surge of casualties, according to William Schomburg of the ICRC.
Despite ongoing conflict, ceasefire efforts remain stalled. Over nine months into the war, Hamas militants continue attacking Israeli forces. Israel aims to eradicate Hamas after an October attack killed 1,200 Israelis. Gaza health authorities report 38,000 Palestinian deaths in Israeli retaliatory strikes.
Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire, involving Arab mediators and backed by the U.S., are currently on hold. Talks aim to end the war and release Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians jailed by Israel. Hamas awaits an Israeli response to a U.S.-drafted ceasefire offer, with suspicions Prime Minister Netanyahu may be delaying any decision.
