The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has expressed satisfaction with the security measures established for this evening's Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) in Cape Town.

"Just like many other major events that have taken place without disruptions nor incidents in the City of Cape Town this year alone, the NATJOINTS is confident that the OPA will take place in a safe and secure environment," stated Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the spokesperson for NATJOINTS.

Security Coordination

NATJOINTS, responsible for coordinating all security and law enforcement operations across South Africa, is led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), State Security Agency (SSA), and South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This year, NATJOINTS has successfully managed several major events, including the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the first sitting of the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures, and the Presidential Inauguration.

"Throughout the policing of all these events, stability prevailed throughout the country, and no major incidents and no disruptions were reported," Mathe emphasized. "This is a direct result of the competence and capabilities of the country's law enforcement agencies coordinated and led by the NATJOINTS."

Security Measures and Public Guidance

Only accredited and authorized individuals will be allowed around the City Hall venue. Mathe warned the public against committing any illegal acts, noting that law enforcement agencies will act decisively against any unlawful conduct.

"Any threats or disruptions will be dealt with decisively within the ambit of the law. Those who wish to protest are urged to do so peacefully and must at all times consider the applicable laws of the country," she added.

Operation Shanela and Aviation Restrictions

High-density operations under Operation Shanela are ongoing, including increased roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and heightened police visibility through foot, vehicle, mounted, and air patrols. Stabilizing operations and deployments at crime hotspots are also underway to ensure comprehensive crime prevention.

The Civil Aviation Authority has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting the airspace within five nautical miles and twelve thousand feet above sea level over Cape Town City Hall. The area is designated a no-drone zone, and violators will face enforcement actions.

Road Closures and Public Cooperation

Road closures have been implemented and communicated accordingly. Mathe expressed gratitude to Cape Town residents for their cooperation and requested continued support from all dignitaries, attendees, and participants at the 2024 OPA.

"Law enforcement agencies are already on the ground and are ready to deliver a safe and secure event," Mathe affirmed.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the Opening of Parliament Address at 7 PM.
