Pakistan Arrests Senior Al-Qaeda Leader Amin ul Haq
Pakistani counter-terrorism officials have apprehended Amin ul Haq, a senior Al-Qaeda leader, who is listed on a U.N. sanctions list. Described as a close associate of Osama Bin Laden, he is accused of planning to sabotage key installations. This marks Pakistan's first major Al-Qaeda arrest in years.
Pakistani counter-terror officials have arrested an Al-Qaeda leader, Amin ul Haq, who figures on a U.N. sanctions list. Officials described him as a close associate of the late Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. This is Pakistan's first Al-Qaeda arrest in many years.
The counter-terrorism department (CTD) in Punjab has registered a legal case against Haq, accusing him of planning to sabotage key installations. However, they did not specify what his exact plans or the installations were. In their statement, CTD's spokesperson hailed this as a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, in collaboration with intelligence agencies.
Pakistan's interior ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. According to a U.N. sanctions panel on ISIL and Al-Qaeda, Haq is named Amin Muhammad ul Haq Saam Khan and is identified as a security coordinator for bin Laden. He was on the U.N. list for activities such as supplying arms to Al-Qaeda. Bin Laden was killed in a 2011 U.S. raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
