ICJ Declares Israeli Settlements Illegal: Implications for Global Politics
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has declared Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories illegal in a significant advisory opinion. The ICJ called for global cooperation to end the Israel-Palestine conflict and emphasized that states should not support or recognize the occupation. The opinion may affect international support for Israel.
The United Nations' highest court has declared Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories illegal, urging global cooperation to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict. This advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), although not binding, holds significant weight under international law and could weaken international support for Israel.
"Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law," ICJ President Nawaf Salam stated, underscoring the court's findings. The ICJ opinion recommends that Israel pay reparations for damages caused by their occupation and calls on the U.N. Security Council, the General Assembly, and all states to refrain from recognizing the occupation as legal or aiding in its maintenance.
This ruling originates from a 2022 U.N. General Assembly request and predates the Gaza conflict that began in October. Despite Israel's arguments that the territories are disputed rather than occupied, the ICJ's opinion reinforces the position held by the United Nations and most of the international community.
