The Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments' directive to eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners' names drew more criticism Saturday with Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind labelling it as 'discriminatory and communal', while Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal questioned its implications for achieving 'Viksit Bharat'.
Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, aligning with Hindustani Awam Morcha, found nothing objectionable in the order, which has been opposed by BJP allies like Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) and Union minister Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). 'It helps buyers locate their favorite stalls without any religious bias,' he said in Patna.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani opposed the mandate, describing it as part of 'a new game of politics under the guise of religion,' which he claims violates fundamental constitutional rights and risks communal harmony. The order has sparked a legal advisory meeting.
