These protests were inspired by widespread demonstrations in Bangladesh against a controversial job quota system.

The trial follows the UAE's attorney general's office indicting the Bangladeshi protesters on charges such as “gathering in a public place with intent to incite unrest,” and causing damage to both law enforcement and property, as reported by the state-owned Emirates News Agency, WAM.

This development comes as the top court in Bangladesh partially rolled back the controversial quota system, marking a victory for local student protesters. Political parties and labor unions are banned in the UAE, where strict laws curb freedom of speech and media organizations are predominantly state-controlled.
