US-India Dialogue Behind Closed Doors Over Alleged Sikh Separatist Assassination Plot

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan commented on the ongoing, constructive, and respectful closed-door talks with India regarding allegations of an Indian official's involvement in a plot to assassinate Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the US. The dialogue follows the arrest and extradition of Indian national Nikhil Gupta.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has characterized the dialogue with India over allegations involving an Indian government official in an assassination plot as “respectful” and “effective.” The discussions on the attempted murder of Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the US have been conducted behind closed doors.

Last November, US federal prosecutors accused Indian national Nikhil Gupta of collaborating with an Indian government employee in the foiled assassination plot. Gupta, detained in the Czech Republic, was extradited to the US on June 14.

Sullivan, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, highlighted that the US had a clear stance and maintained constructive dialogue with India. India, denying the charges, has launched an internal investigation team. CIA Director Bill Burns and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines had previously raised concerns with India over suspicions of involvement in similar incidents, including one in Vancouver.
