Man Trampled to Death by Elephants in Jharkhand

A 50-year-old man, Gyanchandra Mahto, was trampled to death by a herd of 30 elephants in Karmatand village, Dhanbad district, Jharkhand. The incident happened around midnight when the elephants stormed the village. The state government provides a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for deaths caused by elephant attacks.

A 50-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of elephants in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district, a forest official confirmed on Monday.

The tragic event unfolded at Karmatand village in the Topchachi area, approximately 200 km from state capital Ranchi, around midnight when a herd of about 30 elephants entered the village, the official reported.

Identified as Gyanchandra Mahto, the deceased's body was sent for post-mortem on Monday morning.

''After trampling the villager, the herd moved towards Giridih district,'' Dhanbad Division Forest Officer (DFO) Vikash Paliwal said to PTI.

Paliwal added that the kin of the deceased received a token compensation, with the full ex gratia amount to be provided once official procedures are complete. The state government offers a compensation of Rs 4 lakh in such cases.

Karmatand village head Anand Mahto confirmed the herd of elephants stormed the area around 12.30 am. ''We attempted to chase away the herd, but the elephants attacked the villagers, resulting in Gyanchandra's unfortunate death during the chaos,'' he stated.
